The Most Luxurious Beast That Shocked Everyone!
In 1966, Jaguar quietly introduced a new car that didn’t look like much at first—but it ended up playing a key role in the brand’s history. This was the Jaguar 420, a luxury sports saloon built to bridge the gap between the stylish but aging Mark 2 and the oversized 420G. It offered just the right blend of performance, design, and comfort. Jaguar didn’t build it from scratch—they reused much of the S-Type’s structure—but gave it a bold new front end, the bigger 4.2-liter straight-six engine, and cleaner, more modern styling. The result was a car that looked sharper, drove better, and handled modern demands more easily than many of its rivals. It had twin headlights, a wide grille, padded safety interiors, and advanced steering technology for its time. Power steering, all-around disc brakes, and a strong monocoque body made it a smooth and powerful drive.
Under the hood, the 420 delivered 245 horsepower and 283 pound-feet of torque, enough to hit 123 miles per hour and reach 60 in under 10 seconds. That made it faster than many American V8 sedans of the era. Whether fitted with a smooth automatic or a rare manual with overdrive, the Jaguar 420 surprised buyers with its strong performance and solid road manners. Reviewers loved it. Motor magazine praised the ride and quietness. Road & Track called it a pleasure. And even Wheels magazine from Australia liked its handling. Yet despite all this, the 420 lived only a short life. Jaguar launched the all-new XJ6 in 1968, which used the same ideas but with fresher styling. That meant the 420 was quickly pushed aside.
A near-twin version called the Daimler Sovereign also existed, offering the same engine and structure but with a different badge and extra trim. Both cars faded into the background as the XJ series took center stage. Today, only a few survive—just about 1,500 Jaguar 420s and 1,000 Daimler Sovereigns are still roadworthy. Most are found in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia. The Jaguar 420 was never flashy or famous. But it did everything right, and it quietly shaped the future of one of Britain’s most iconic car companies. This is the story of the most luxurious underdog of the 1960s—a car that shocked everyone, then disappeared before the applause stopped.
