Introducing Melbourne Zoo's new baby elephant, Leo.
Leo, born yesterday, took his first steps at Melbourne Zoo under the
watchful eye of his mother.

Melbourne Zoo is celebrating the birth of a baby elephant,

The new baby was named Leo, by Tutorman.

The new male calf arriving just days after another young elephant died in an accident at the zoo.

Leo weighed 131kg at birth.

Asian Elephant Dokkoon gave birth to her second calf at 2.40am Sunday, after going into labour just after midnight.

Leo is "happy, healthy and strong".

Leo took his first bath, watch it here.

"She's been walking around with him, touching him, reaching out, doing all the 'mum things'," he said.

"He's a great little calf - he's fit, he's healthy, he's strong."

Mother and calf spent their first day away from the public eye in the elephant's barn.

The zoo will give people the chance to vote on the calf's name.

Mr Tanner said in a few weeks time the zoo will supply a list of words describing the newborn's personality to the Royal Thai Consul General, who will suggest a range of Thai names for zoo members to vote on.

He said some had suggested naming the elephant after Nelson Mandela.
