WEST LINDSEY PARISH #95: MARKET RASEN

Welcome to the biggest of the three Rasens. This is the town of Market Rasen, the last of the three towns within West Lindsey. Market Rasen lies on the River Rase, around 13 miles away from Lincoln and 18 miles away from Gainsborough. It also lies just off the A46 - the main road between Lincoln and Grimsby. Market Rasen is the second biggest parish in West Lindsey in terms of population, second only to Gainsborough.

The town centre has lots of 19th-century buildings sporting a lot of Georgian and Victorian architecture. In the middle of the town is a market place with a medieval church, which was restored in the 19th century. There are many reasons why this place is famous. One reason is that it was the epicentre of an earthquake in 2008.

Its flagship landmark is its Racecourse, which stages National Hunt racing throughout the year, despite the fact it’s traditionally a winter sport. As with other small towns, today’s main walk is around the town centre only.
