The Pyramid of Austerlitz is located at the highest point of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, a hill formation that is situated east of Utrecht. The monument was built in the early 1800s during the time of Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1804, one of his generals, Marmont built the pyramid with his French Batavian Army as a tribute to his friend and example Napoleon Bonaparte. Marmont was inspired by his campaigns to Egypt, therefore he chose to build a pyramid topped with an obelisk. This obelisk was made of wood and quickly decay making it hard to repair. Later, Napoleon’s brother Lodewijk Napoleon who was king of Holland at that time gave the monument its current name “Pyramid of Austerlitz", he named it after the battle of Austerlitz in the current Czech Republic. In 1894, a new obelisk was built out of stone, but the pyramid itself was barely repaired. Since 2000, after years of renovation and repairs, the pyramid can be visited again by the public in its form as it once was.
