Renuka Ji Lake is a major lake located in the Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is named after the Hindu goddess Renuka, who is believed to be the mother of Lord Parashurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Renuka Ji Lake is not only a popular tourist destination but also holds cultural and historical significance in the region. Its serene environment, religious significance, and opportunity to experience the beauty of nature make it a must-visit place for travelers exploring the Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh.
History of Renuka Ji Lake
It is said that a demon named Sahastrabahu had invaded this area. And tried to get Kamdhenu cow from Maharishi Jamadagni, Renuka’s husband. But Jamadagni refused to give Kamdhenu the cow. And that Sahasrarjun killed Jamadagni. After this, the devil tried to kidnap Renuka. Renuka had jumped into the Ram Sarovar Lake to escape from that devil. At that time the name of this lake was Ram Sarovar. When Renuka’s son Parshuram came to know about this, he killed the demon Sahastrabahu. And also gave new life to his father with his powers.
And then requested his mother Renuka to come out of the lake. But Mata Renuka said that she would now reside in this lake forever. And told her son that she would come to visit him once a year. After this, the lake was named Renuka Lake. And from that time its shape also changed into that of a woman. Maa Renuka ji comes to meet Parshuram a day before Dashami. A huge Shobha Yatra is also taken out here on that day. It is believed that Lord Parashurama is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and that Maa Renuka and her husband obtained this boon after rigorous penance.
Renuka Fair
Renuka Ji Lake is considered sacred by devotees, and an annual Renuka Fair known as “Renuka Ji Mela” is held here in the month of November. The fair attracts a large number of devotees who come to pay respect to Goddess Renuka and seek her blessings. A day before, on the day of Dashami, Parshuram’s palanquin is brought to Renuka from the ancient temple of Jammu Koti village. Which is known as ‘Shobha Yatra’, in which lakhs of devotees participate. On the eve of Prabodhini Ekadashi, the five-day Renuka Mela begins with the religious observance of the arrival of Renuka’s son Parashurama at Renuka Lake in Himachal. Devotees from all over the country reach to see the union of mother and son.
Tourists can enjoy boating in the calm waters of Renuka Ji Lake. Paddle boats are available for rent, allowing tourists to explore the lake and soak in the natural beauty at a leisurely pace. Renuka Ji Lake is a part of the Renuka Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 402.80 hectares and offers wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers an opportunity to spot various species.
