Flying under the Inter-City banner for the Locomotive Services group, the 'Western Wanderer' would feature a trio of heritage diesels at the helm from three different classes, for a meandering ramble around the mid-west.
The tour would originate from Crewe, working to Gloucester, Bristol, and Cardiff, with the loco at the helm changing for each leg of the tour. The penultimate leg of which, would see D1015 "Western Champion" lead from Bristol to Gloucester via the Berks & Hants line through Hungerford, and the Great Western Mainline through Didcot and Swindon, to join the Golden Valley line for a sprint north over Sapperton Bank. The final leg would see D213 "Andania" double-head with 45118 "The Royal Artilleryman", returning the tour from Gloucester to Crewe via Birmingham and the fearsome Lickey Bank.
Facing the long shadows of a late summer evening, D1015 strode up Sapperton Bank with ample power to spare, passing Coates with an impressive turn of speed. Moving north, D213 & 45118 shattered the peace as they crested Lickey Bank, passing through Barnt Green station 7 minutes early; narrowly escaping the risk os being bowled by the arriving 730037.
