In today’s video, I’m diving into Google Keyword Planner, a free tool that’s essential for both Google Ads and boosting your organic traffic. Whether you’re running paid ad campaigns or looking to rank higher in search results, this tool can help you find new keywords, check search volumes, and optimize your strategy. We’re going to go step-by-step, so by the end, you’ll be able to use this tool like a pro.
First things first, to access the Google Keyword Planner, you’ll need to head to your Google Ads account. You’ve got two options to get there: use the “Tools” menu and click on “Keyword Planner,” or just type it into the search bar at the top of your account. Once you’re in, you’ll see three main features: Discover New Keywords, Get Search Volume and Forecasts, and Organize Keywords into Ad Groups. For this video, we’ll focus on discovering new keywords, as it’s the most useful for finding search terms to target.
When starting out, you can choose between entering keywords or a website URL. I recommend starting with keywords, especially if your site isn’t fully optimized yet. For example, let’s say you’re selling sneakers. We’ll use keywords like “sneakers,” “men’s sneakers,” “Nike sneakers,” and “women’s sneakers.” This helps you get results that are more focused on your niche, making it easier to get useful keyword ideas.
Once you hit search, you’ll be greeted with a bunch of data—trust me, it can be a lot. You’ll see keyword results based on things like location, language, and timeframe. Let’s break it down. You can adjust your location settings to target specific areas. For instance, if you’re targeting the Midwest, you can select states like Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, etc. This gives you search data for that region, which is perfect if you’re running a local campaign.
You can also choose to include search results from Google’s search partners or just Google alone. I’d suggest sticking with Google to start with, so you’re getting the most relevant results. By default, the tool shows data from the past 12 months, which I recommend keeping, as it helps you spot trends and seasonality in search behavior.
The tool allows you to filter your keyword results even further by using options like exact match or semantic match. If you’re looking for broader results, semantic matching can help you find similar terms. For instance, filtering by “women's” might also pull up related terms like "ladies" or "girls." This is super useful for finding both branded and non-branded terms, whether you’re aiming to target competitors or capture more general search traffic.
Now, let’s talk about refining keywords. You can drill down by brand, type, or category—like focusing only on "Nike sneakers" or "running shoes." This kind of filtering is really helpful if you’re planning ad campaigns or working on blog content. The Refine Keywords feature can also help you identify which terms are worth targeting based on metrics like search volume, competition, and estimated cost-per-click (CPC). Remember, these CPC estimates are based on all ad placements, not just search ads, so I’d recommend budgeting a bit more than what you see here.
One of the coolest features is the forecasting tool, which lets you see what your chosen keywords could do for you in terms of clicks, impressions, and conversions. This is helpful for planning, as you can set your budget and bid to get a rough idea of potential performance. But keep in mind, these are just estimates—real-world results can vary based on factors like competition and auction dynamics.
The key takeaway here is finding high-value keywords. You want to focus on keywords that have good search volume but aren’t too competitive. Going for mid-range search volume is usually your best bet. If you aim too high, you’ll face a lot of competition, and if you aim too low, you won’t get enough traffic. By narrowing down to about 10-20 solid keywords, you’ll set yourself up for better performance, whether it’s for Google Ads or SEO.
