This is a deep dive into one of Italy's most important grapes. In addition to appellations in Italy we also cover Barbera's unique history here in California. Then we spend serious time talking about vineyard practices, soil types and various growing conditions. Then we go into Barbera's unique challenges in the winery, from reduction to acidity, and the unique alignment with oak aging for an Italian grape. Then we talk food and go through a comparative tasting of Italian and California wines.
This class was in conjunction with Paul Robinson of Bottivio (www.bottivino.com) who was an SF and NY sommelier before becoming a renegade educator and retailer. Pietro Buttitta is the owner and winemaker of Prima Materia Winery which grows grapes in Lake County, Ca. and has their tasting room in Oakland, California.
