Todd Turnquist, a PLC Product Manager with McNaughton-McKay, introduces an overview of how to select fiber media for Stratix® switches from Rockwell Automation®. To help customers select the right networking fiber for their Stratix switch application, this Tech Support video gives an overview of the different networking fiber used with industrial Ethernet switches. Comparing the cross-sections of individual strands of fiber reveals differences in core diameters and a consistency in the diameter of the outside cladding. The different-sized core diameters will affect what transmitters can be used with that fiber, with the OM1 Multimode utilizing LEDs or vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) and the OS2 Single Mode using fiber lasers. These differences in transmission mean that fiber types are not interchangeable. Additionally, knowing the history and development of the fiber types and the ways of differentiating them gives greater understanding to selecting fiber optic media for your facility. If you have any questions about which media is right for your application, comment below or contact your local McNaughton-McKay.
