There's something akin to Paradise in the grounds of the Lords of the Manor Hotel in Upper Slaughter. With the sunlight dappling through the trees, the well maintained gardens and the huge magisterial trees starting to gain their Autumn colours.
While I have never stayed at this hotel overnight, I have often been there to enjoy a lunch or to spend an hour or two in the bar. The food is magnificent and I recommend it to anyone visiting the area.
Upper Slaughter is less visited by tourists than Lower Slaughter but it is equally beautiful. According to legend, and legends are hard to verify but often cited, it is here in Upper Slaughter that Milton was inspired to write his epic poem 'Paradise Lost'. A tragic work chronicling both the misfortunes of Satan and those of Adam and Eve. I don't know what it was in Upper Slaughter that might have inspired him. Maybe, in its gardens a reflection of what was lost in Eden.
