Actual Artifacts is a new short educational series that explores Will Rogers artifacts and asks the question: what is important about this item that helps tell the story of Will Rogers? What do you have in your home or room that tells your story?
Longhorn taxidermy- This is an example of the feral and ranged cattle roped during Rogers’ youth as a range cowboy. The steer was a gift from Amon Carter. The horns on the steer measure 7’4”. Rogers met Carter in 1922 and forged a deep friendship. The two shared many passions including news, aviation, sports, philanthropy, and art. In fact, Carter's interest in the art of the West, particularly his interest in Charles Russell, reportedly developed from his close friendship with Will. Carter was an avid collector of western art, and upon his death The Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth was established. The Amon G. Carter estate has preserved his collection of paintings and sculptures by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. You can visit this museum when it reopens after Covid-19 as it continues to support art of the American West.
