After a century of housing policy inertia built during the “red-lining” era of the early 20th century, children born today face a sad reality: the broad trajectory of their lives will be shaped by the five digits of a single number over which they have no influence. That number is their home’s zip code. We all know how urban and suburban neighborhoods remain largely segregated along racial/income/social class lines. But, as Amy argues, that was not always the case, and it need not be so going forward. The many benefits of economically integrated housing can be achieved, while the oft-repeated fears of property devaluation can be avoided. In this talk, Amy tells us how. Amy M. Riegel, Director of Housing at CareSource, works tirelessly for the underserved within the community. She is focused on building collaborative partnerships to address affordable housing through development, financing, and policy with an emphasis on improving health outcomes. Amy has served on numerous Boards within Ohio and nationally that are focused on poverty elimination, affordable housing, and neighborhood revitalization. She is a graduate of Wright State University, and proudly lives in Dayton with her husband and three young daughters. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
