May 8th, 1945. Halifax, Nova Scotia. The war in Europe was over. Church bells rang across the harbor. Ships blasted their horns. Tens of thousands of people poured into the streets, laughing and crying and hugging strangers. Canadian sailors in their dark blue uniforms danced with women they had never met. Soldiers in khaki threw their caps in the air. Everyone wanted to celebrate. Everyone wanted to forget six years of death and fear and rationing.
