As we approach Ramadan, Allah ﷻ opens a door of mercy before the month of mercy even begins. In this powerful reminder, we reflect on Sha‘ban, a month many people overlook — yet one that the Prophet ﷺ fasted abundantly in and used to prepare spiritually for Ramadan.

The Prophet ﷺ taught us that deeds are presented to Allah on Mondays and Thursdays, and that forgiveness is withheld from those whose hearts are filled with hatred, spite, and unresolved enmity. In the middle of Sha‘ban, Allah ﷻ looks at His creation and forgives all — except those who commit shirk and those whose hearts are consumed by rancor toward others.

This lecture explores the deep connection between shirk and shahna (hatred):

How hatred can remove the love of Allah from the heart

Why envy and spite “shave” a person’s religion

How Shaytan fell not due to lack of worship, but because hatred and pride consumed him

We are reminded that Ramadan is not the training camp — Sha‘ban is. Ramadan is where we exert ourselves, but Sha‘ban is where we clear our hearts, repair relationships, and make space for the Qur’an.

The Prophet ﷺ endured immense harm, yet nothing distracted him from his pursuit of Allah’s love. His example teaches us that holding onto hatred only deprives us — not those who wronged us.

Before Ramadan arrives, Allah ﷻ offers us amnesty. The question is: will we take it?

This is a call to:

Empty the heart of resentment

Seek reconciliation for the sake of Allah

Forgive so that we may be forgiven

Prepare the heart to be filled with the Qur’an

May Allah unite our hearts, forgive our shortcomings, and allow us to enter Ramadan with a clean slate.
