Why is Greenland so important to Donald Trump? / How America Really Bought Alaska from Russia

People, after the recent developments in Venezuela, hardly anyone is writing off Trump’s statements about Greenland as just another of his oddball rants. Right now, there are roughly 200 U.S. troops in the island's capital, Nuuk; and that’s a staggering presence for a territory of only 57,000 people.
Diplomacy hasn’t been able to bear any fruit, and Trump is increasingly floating the idea of taking control "by any means necessary." Officially, it's referred to as military exercises. But when troops from France, Germany, the UK, Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands start showing up after the Americans, it’s clear that this is more than a routine drill.
The push to make Greenland American is nothing new. Washington first tried to buy the island from Denmark back in 1867. That deal fell through, as did another attempt in 1946. But in 2019, Donald Trump revived the old dream and, like those before him, was met with a hard ‘no.’ Unwilling to take no for an answer in his second term, he has upped the ante dramatically. If he fails now, it would mark a major foreign policy defeat. He’s gone too far out on a limb repeating too often that Greenland “will be American.”
So what if the U.S. had actually sealed the deal 160 years ago? It’s not so hard to picture. In fact, 1867 — the very year the Greenland talks failed — was when America made another historic purchase: it bought Alaska from Russia.
To make sense of the current standoff over Greenland, we’ll revisit the events that took place 160 years ago and see how the U.S. got to buy Alaska from Russia — and why that deal remains one of the most unusual and successful bargains in history.
