The Norden bombsight revolutionized World War II strategic bombing by enabling unprecedented precision from 25,000 feet. Swiss engineer Carl Norden spent fifteen years developing gyroscopic stabilization technology that compensated for aircraft movement, allowing bombardiers to accurately target German industrial facilities in daylight. The fifty-pound device, containing over 2,000 precision parts and costing $8,000 each, used three spinning gyroscopes and mechanical computers to automatically calculate bomb trajectories. Though combat conditions prevented "pickle barrel" accuracy, the Norden transformed bombing from guesswork into engineering science, achieving 300-400 feet accuracy versus previous quarter-mile errors. Its gyroscopic principles became the foundation for modern cruise missiles, drones, and smartphone navigation systems.
