Solo female hiking the Via Dinarica in Bosnia and Herzegovina isn’t always easy. After 700 km on the trail, I still wasn’t enjoying it, and turning back from a thunderstorm felt like the last straw — so I decided to take a break.
I caught a bus to Mostar, where I joined a walking tour, met other travelers, and enjoyed amazing food. From there I headed to Sarajevo, planning only a short stay, but I ended up spending four days at a guesthouse, hiking and sharing dinners with new friends.
This pause was exactly what I needed. It reminded me that thru-hiking isn’t always about a perfect continuous footpath — it’s about the bigger goals: exploring new cultures, connecting with people, and creating meaningful experiences.
