How GOOD was Sam Snead?

June 1939. Sam Snead stands on the 18th tee needing only a PAR to win his first U.S. Open. A stranger in the gallery tells him he needs a birdie. That stranger was WRONG! What happened next haunted Snead for the rest of his life and created golf's greatest tragedy!

Sam Snead won 82 PGA Tour events—TIED with Tiger Woods for most in history! Three Masters, three PGA Championships, one British Open. He possessed what many consider the MOST BEAUTIFUL GOLF SWING EVER! Gary Player said: "Sam Snead had the greatest golf swing of any human being that ever lived!" But there's ONE trophy that NEVER sat on his mantle. One championship that slipped through his fingers FOUR agonizing times: THE U.S. OPEN!

Born barefoot in Virginia backwoods, young Sam couldn't afford clubs—so he MADE THEM from hickory sticks and buggy whip handles! Those primitive homemade clubs forced him to develop a swing SO SMOOTH it became the GOLD STANDARD! In his 1936 debut, his first two drives went out of bounds. Career over? Then he launched his third drive 350 YARDS... ONTO THE GREEN!

But 1939 destroyed him. Standing on the 72nd hole, Snead needed only a par-5 to WIN. A spectator told him he needed a BIRDIE (he was wrong—par would win!). Thinking he had to attack, Snead pushed his drive into rough, buried his 2-wood in a bunker, then TRIPLE-BOGEYED! An 8 on a par-5 when a 5 would have WON! "I was ready to go out with a gun and pay somebody to shoot me" Snead later wrote.

1947 was CRUEL! 18-hole playoff against Lew Worsham. Dead even after 17 holes. Snead inside 3 feet, ready to putt... Worsham STOPPED HIM to measure who was away. Snead was away by ONE INCH! The interruption SHATTERED his concentration. He MISSED the 30-inch putt! Four runner-up finishes. FOUR TIMES within arm's reach!

But Snead didn't let it define him! In 1965, at 52 years old, he won his 82nd title—OLDEST winner ever! In 1974, at 62, finished 3rd at PGA Championship! In 1979, at 67, shot 67 AND 66—matching his AGE twice! In 1983, at 71, shot 60 at his home course! He won tournaments across SIX DECADES—1930s through 1980s! NO ONE will EVER do that again!
