Elara traced a line down the side of his face. "And what did you say?"

"I gave them the reel answer," he murmured. "I told them I'm married to my work. That I'm still searching."

"Good actor," she whispered.

"It’s not acting if it protects this," he said, opening his eyes to look at her. "If they knew... if the world knew..."

"They'd turn it into a storyline," she finished for him. "They'd want the photos, the drama, the red carpets."

"Exactly."

A soft thud from upstairs made them both look up. Moments later, the patter of small feet echoed on the wooden floorboards.

A little girl, no older than four, stood at the bottom of the stairs, rubbing sleep from her eyes. She had Sam’s height already, promising to be tall, and hair the color of autumn leaves.

"Daddy?" she croaked.

"Hey, Isla," he whispered into her hair. "You should be asleep, little bird."
