You've maybe heard this expression: "you have two ears and one mouth. So you should listen twice as much as you talk."
True, but double nothing is still nothing.
The thing is, listening is only good if there is something worth listening to.
This is our challenge as speakers. You have earned the right to use your mouth, you have not earned the right to have people listen to you. People won't even begin using their ears if they don't think you have anything of value to say.
That is the challenge Julian Treasure aims to solve in his TED talk "How to speak so that people want to listen".
This is a speech very much about taking responsibility as speakers to give our audience a compelling reason to listen to us.
This TED talk is very meta, as it's a speaker using his speaking skills to teach people how to be a better speaker.
