Docker images are built in layers, like a layered sandwich. Each instruction in a Dockerfile creates a new layer. These layers are cached and reusable, which makes builds faster and saves disk space and bandwidth.
In this video you will:
Understand what a Docker image is and why images are built in layers
Learn how Dockerfile instructions map to image layers
Build a simple image (Alpine + curl) using docker build -t
List images with docker images and validate the build
Inspect image layers using docker history
Modify a Dockerfile and observe layer caching during rebuilds
Run the image to confirm behavior changes (curl --help vs curl --version)
Inspect layers visually using the open-source dive tool
(Optional) Tag and push an image to Docker Hub
This chapter is part of the AWS EKS Security Masterclass on PeachyCloudSecurity YouTube by TheShuklaDuo (Anjali & Divyanshu).
