In June 1940 shortly before the German occupation of the Channel Islands the population of Alderney was evacuated to the United Kingdom. It would be five long years before the Islanders returned.
Alderney was finally liberated on the 16th of May 1945. However, such was the devastation, it took the British army, with the assistance of German prisoners of war, seven months to prepare the island for the return of the civilian population.
Homecoming Day is, as the name suggests, commemorates the 15th of December 1945. That was the day the first group of about 100 islanders finally returned to Alderney.
The island they returned to was very different to the one that they left behind and their fortitude and strength were remarkable as they rebuilt the island into the place it is today.
