Honeysuckle Weekends - Malkauns

With so many flat notes, firstly anyone would think to have a strong minor quality in Malkauns. However, when you closely examine it, the absence of the fifth and the strong presence of the fourth causes the mind to invert it into a more tranquil natured one.

The raga is often pictured as a person finding resolution whilst meditating on some great loss. It‘s said to be evolved from an ancient raga Mal-Kaushik ('he who wears serpents like garlands’)..

Even if it's just a way of presenting right mood of the raga (and having nothing fictional about it), according to an online resource, "Some believe it can attract evil spirits if not handled correctly, as if the shadows of Shiva’s tandav dance are buried within the raga, waiting to escape. A prominent Indian arts critic recently told me that she would rather miss a publication deadline than review a CD of Malkauns before midnight"
