Early 1990's documentary series examining the so-called "Four Asian Tigers" -- South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore -- as they are rising in power and influence to rival then front-runner Japan in foreign investment, trade, and internal industrial growth. Export-oriented industrial policies, low taxes, minimal red tape and lax financial services oversight helped these 'Mini Dragons' achieve exceptionally high annual GDP growth rates & by the 21st century all four had achieved the status of first world high-income economies.
Episode 4, Hong Kong, presents a vivid picture of a economic powerhouse and leading offshore financial center, the last remaining jewel in the crown of the British Empire that was founded as an entrepôt to facilitate free trade between East and West. Often cited as the perfect example of a what a hard working industrious Chinese population could achieve with an efficient British civil administration, this episode finds the city state anxiously preparing for the scheduled handover to the People's Republic of China in 1997, with normal citizens and international business people alike questioning if their unique economic model will survive the transfer of sovereignty.
