Iran's parliament on August 29 approved all 22 nominations to President Hashemi Rafsanjani's new cabinet. Observers described the vote of confidence by the 270-member parliament for all the candidates as "unprecedented," and said in every previous cabinet debate, several candidates had failed to secure approval from a majority of deputies present. The vote came after Rafsanjani got a last-minute boost for his proposed Cabinet Tuesday from radical Parliament Speaker Mehdi Karrubi.
