Our trip to Antarctica, which also took in the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, was one year in the planning and the booking. Part 10 sets out the last day of onshore activities as we make two wet landings in the desolate but dramatic landscapes of Deception Island.
Deception Island is in the South Shetland Islands close to the Antarctic Peninsula. It has a large (and usually safe) natural harbour, which is the caldera of an active volcano that seriously damaged local scientific stations in 1967 and 1969. While various countries have asserted sovereignty, Deception Island is administered under the Antarctic Treaty System meaning it is under no control.
Our first landing was at Telefon Bay where we hiked to the rim of one of the many volcanic craters. Our second landing was at Whalers Bay, the site of an abandoned Whaling Station.
Deception Island was definitely a unique place to visit and a great way to finish the onshore activities of this amazing adventure.
