Rabi Lamichhane certain to be released from jail depending on the Supreme Court’s verdict? What is Justice Tek Prasad Dhungana’s single bench doing, and what is Rabi Lamichhane doing in jail?
The news that Suman Shrestha has left Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is false. It is true that Sumana Shrestha resigned from her post to give others an opportunity. Although she has given up the General Secretary position, Sumana Shrestha is still a Member of Parliament from RSP.
Dear viewers, this is today’s update.
Rastriya Swatantra Party leader Rabi Lamichhane’s political future and personal freedom now depend on the decision of the Supreme Court. He is implicated in the Supreem Cooperative fraud case. The High Court Bench of Tulsipur, Butwal, had ordered that Lamichhane be sent to judicial custody. Against that order, Rabi Lamichhane has filed a review petition at the Supreme Court. Now, the final decision of the Supreme Court will determine both his life path and a new direction for the Rastriya Swatantra Party.
The public is now wondering whether Rabi Lamichhane will be allowed to fight the case outside of jail or will have to spend a long time in prison. The responsibility to settle that question lies with the Supreme Court. Previously, the District Court had released him, but the Butwal bench overturned that decision and ordered him to be held in custody. Lamichhane has been accused of being involved in cooperative fraud.
The Rastriya Swatantra Party, which emerged as an alternative force, has already established itself as the fourth-largest party in Nepal. Its founding president, Rabi Lamichhane, is currently in jail, while party leaders and supporters are awaiting the Supreme Court’s verdict. Once the Home Minister and even the Prime Minister (in a short stint), Lamichhane is now spending his days alone in Block No. 4 of the District Jail in Bhairahawa. The case has reached a decisive turning point at the Supreme Court. If the Supreme Court upholds the order of the High Court, Lamichhane’s stay in prison will undoubtedly be extended.
Lamichhane’s imprisonment has stirred turmoil within Rastriya Swatantra Party.
Dear viewers, similarly, Suman Shrestha, Deputy General Secretary of the Rastriya Swatantra Party and Member of the House of Representatives, has resigned from her post as Deputy General Secretary. However, she has not left the Rastriya Swatantra Party—she has only stepped down from her position, stating that she wants to give someone else a chance to hold it.
Dear viewers, Suman Shrestha has submitted a proposal to return her focus to her role in the House of Representatives by resigning from her position as Deputy General Secretary. In the proposal submitted to the party's acting president, DP Aryal, she mentioned that she wants to put the principle of "one person, one responsibility" into practice.
Shrestha stated that she wants to limit herself to the role of a lawmaker responsible for shaping public policy and wishes to hand over the party's campaigning responsibilities to someone else. She emphasized the need to distinguish between the roles of state/governance and party activism, stating that it's time to learn to separate the two.
She further said that when a lawmaker responsible for making public policies also holds a party post, it does not send a good message—someone else should take on that role. In her proposal to the party, she stressed the importance of opening the door for another capable person to take on the position.
Shrestha explained that her decision should not be seen as personal but should be understood from a principled perspective. She mentioned that it is not appropriate, even from a human standpoint, for one person to hold two major responsibilities simultaneously.
Dear viewers, Suman Shrestha has not left the party. She resigned because she believes one should not remain in the same position forever and wants to provide opportunities to other capable individuals. However, she still remains a Member of Parliament from Rastriya Swatantra Party.
