DAY 2 of the national forest grind here in Virginia produced one of the most intense turkey hunting experiences of my life. After getting close to sealing the deal the day before, I went and scouted for the next day. I found a longbeard on another section of national forest and planned to dive in after him early the next day. I rolled into the parking area at 4:30a.m. and of course, a truck was already there, so I moved onto plan B.....and eventually plan C. As daylight cracked the horizon, I listened to a flock of Toms fire off across the valley, as I gathered my things to hike over BOOM less than 200yds away a Tom fired off. I snuck up to a bench flat adjacent to his roost and setup. After watching him fly down, he began his slow and steady march right to me. The gobbling and drumming were so intense that I could feel the vibrations off of him, and then heartbreak happened. The Tom putted and began to work off after noticing the small camera light off the GoPro... I tried to get him to stop and let one fly. Thankfully, it was a clean miss, and besides the frustration in myself, it was a beautiful experience to have one screaming less than 60yds away. I got myself together and made the jot across the valley and struck up the FIVE longbeards I had heard initially. They closed the distance insanely quickly, and I took no chances with the cameras ruining the opportunity on this one. All five longbeards worked up the bluff to me less than 40 yds, and I was able to seal the deal. While the long spurred joker fell into the creek below, I still had that sour taste in my mouth from taking a shot I shouldn't have. The next day, knowing there were four more Toms to be chased, I dove in again and was able to punch my second tag in Virginia. Two LONG spurred birds in two days, ride the highs, and learn from the lows. Turkey hunting is a frustrating battle, but it's a sweet feeling when it all comes together.
