RNLI 40th Anniversary of Penlee Lifeboat Disaster

On 19 Dec 1981, the Solomon Browne launched: her crew would never return. For the 40th anniversary we hear fresh perspectives on the Penlee disaster: on what happened that night and how the families and community were changed forever.

Jo and Martin share memories of their fathers who died: Martin’s Dad was Jo's future father-in-law, and her children therefore lost both their grandfathers that night. Penlee’s current Coxswain, Patch, and current Mechanic, Tony, recall what happened and how the disaster impacts the community of Mousehole to this day.

For the 40th anniversary of the disaster, we have opened a Book of Remembrance to commemorate the crew's courage, celebrate the lives of those lost that night & mark the sacrifice of a community still grieving.

But it’s not just lifeboats. RNLI lifeguards patrol 248 beaches across the UK and Channel Islands, keeping people safe, providing safety advice and rescuing those in trouble. Education volunteers visit schools and swimming clubs to help teach the next generation how to enjoy the water safely. And volunteer fundraisers and shop workers give up their time to generate vital funds. The RNLI is also working to help communities around the world that are most at risk of drowning.
