Ishigaki Island, also known as Ishigakajimi, is one of the Yaeyama Islands. It's the main island and is often referred to as the gateway to the other remote Islands. This stunning island is considered the center of transportation in the region. Ishigaki Island travel enthusiasts enjoy the proximity to the Okinawa Main Island.
The region's major airport (Ishigaki Airport) is found in Ishigaki City, an area located in the southernmost part of Japan. While this area is the most populous city in the region, it provides exquisite nature views and a long list of marine life to observe.
Many visit this subtropical paradise to hang out on the beaches. Three popular options include Yonehara Beach, Ishigaki Sunset Beach, and Sukuji Beach. Visitors enjoy some of the prettiest views of sunrises and sunsets from the beaches. These beaches are split into sandy areas and rocky shores, with both options providing incredible views.
These beaches are also ideal for snorkeling. Scuba divers can enjoy the coral reefs that surround the island. Those who decide to pursue this activity will be able to view Ishigaki's marine life like manta rays as they glide past. These manta rays are especially visible near Kabira Bay in Manta Scramble. However, some of the best scuba diving is found at Sekiseishoko National Park, near Ishigaki Port.
While the beaches are unmatched here, the land provides additional stunning views. Travelers should take a moment to appreciate the beauty of the lakes that run through Ishigaki Island. These stunning spots are surrounded by lush greenery providing the ideal location for kayaking.
Another popular destination in Ishigaki is the Tamatorizaki Observation Point. This free platform provides visitors with an excellent lookout point for the stunning emerald water, hilly landscapes, Ibaruma Bay, and Cape Tamatori.
Adventurous travelers can spend time hiking through the palm forest, a palm tree grove featuring dozens of palm tree species. Or, visitors can explore the popular Ishigaki Island limestone cave. This cave is filled with stalactites and has been around for 200 years.
This island has a rich history, like the other Yaeyama Islands. Initially, this group of islands was considered part of the Ryukyu Kingdom. This history can be seen in Ishigaki's museums and historical sites. Yaima Village also allows travelers to step into the past with performances that feature songs and dances passed down for generations.
There's no better way to relax after a stressful day than by viewing a video of Ishigaki Island. We fly over the natural wonders that Ishigaki offers during this video, from the incredible coral reefs to the dense palm tree areas.
