The banker laid ten thousand dollars in gold coins on the table. Enough money to buy a ranch, retire comfortable, never work another day. Marcus Weston smiled like a man who believed money could buy anything.
"Vincent Calloway robbed my bank two weeks ago. Killed three guards. I want him brought back dead or alive. Preferably dead." Weston pushed the fortune across the table toward the most feared bounty hunter in three territories. "You're the best, Mercer. This gold is yours the moment you bring me proof he's gone."
Jacob Mercer stared at the coins without touching them. Forty-two years old, face mapped with scars from two decades hunting dangerous men. His eyes carried the weight of every bullet fired, every outlaw dragged back across brutal miles. He'd killed twenty-seven men. Captured sixty-three more. Never failed a contract.
"No."
Weston blinked. "I'm sorry?"
"I said no. I'm not taking your contract."
The saloon went silent. Elena Rodriguez stopped pouring whiskey. Sheriff Bradford's coffee cup froze halfway to his lips. Nobody turned down ten thousand dollars. Nobody turned down the easiest fortune in the West.
"Mr. Mercer, perhaps you misheard the amount—"
"I heard fine." Jake stood, his chair scraping against wood. He walked to the wall where wanted posters hung like wallpaper of human failures. His finger landed on one. Faded. Old. Five hundred dollar reward.
"This man. I'll bring him in for five hundred."
The poster showed a different face. Different name. Different crime. But Jake's eyes held something Weston hadn't seen before.
Not greed. Not duty. Something far more dangerous: recognition.
