Iodine and cobalt are two essential trace minerals that play critical roles in beef cattle health and performance, especially in forage-based diets. Iodine is necessary for thyroid hormone production, which regulates metabolism, reproduction, and growth. Deficiencies can cause goiter, weak or hairless calves, and poor reproductive performance. Forages are typically low in iodine, and high sulfate or nitrate levels in water or feed can further limit iodine availability, making supplementation through mineral mixes (usually as calcium iodate or EDDI) important. Cobalt, on the other hand, is vital for rumen microbes to produce vitamin B12, which supports energy metabolism. Deficiency signs include poor appetite, weight loss, and unthriftiness, often occurring on sandy or acidic soils with naturally low cobalt levels. Both minerals are required in very small amounts, but consistent intake is key to preventing deficiencies.
