A video shot over the cab of a Roundhouse Fowler. The rig has been under development for some time. The clip allows the camera to hit obstructions and fall off and not damage the engine. Some padding of the clip protects the paintwork and reduces noise transfer through the rig. It is however, firmly held to avoid it falling off or sliding during videoing. Once in steam the loco makes several circuits of the line. A team of helpers experimented with holding back foliage and then pruning it. This also provided a variety of opportunities to try different editing ideas for dealing with the viaduct and tunnel which the camera could not fit through above the loco. The rig and preparations needed for making this sort of video are now pretty much sorted.
At the end we tested the first attempt at a rig for filming from within the cab. Again, the long overhang at the back of the Fowler’s cab makes an excellent attachment point and just leaves space for the camera. The rig held firm and the camera did not overheat but the positioning will need to be refined ready for our next attempt.
Thank you to our hosts at the R&SLR and the members of the East Devon Area Group of the 16mm narrow gauge modelers who helped with the making of this video.
