Incorporated in 1850, Santa Barbara began during the Spanish era in the 1600's. Many of the streets were named to reflect the influence of the Spanish period, as well as some of the original buildings. State Street is the main street, converted to outdoor dining for pedestrians and cyclists, that runs down the middle of downtown Santa Barbara from northwest to southwest towards the Pacific Ocean and ends at Stearns Wharf.

Numerous original buildings in downtown continue to exist, especially buildings with Spanish and Victorian architectural influence. Mediterranean and Mission architectural styles are also adopted throughout the city.
