The Heroic Sacrifice of Sergeant Loring: A Story of Valor in the Korean War

On November 22, 1952, he was patrolling a military base with four F-80s. After spotting a large artillery concentration near Sniper Ridge, he moved into the position and began dive bombing. However, his aircraft was hit several times by anti-aircraft fire and was seriously damaged. His fellow pilot suggested that he abort his mission and return to base, but Sergeant Loring hung up the radio and resumed his mission. He accelerated his aircraft at a 40-degree angle at an altitude of 4,000 feet and charged towards the artillery position. His impact completely destroyed the artillery position, and Loring was killed instantly. Sergeant Loring's body was never recovered, and he was listed as "missing in action, presumed dead."
