Roman Statkowski (1859-1925) launched his foray into music at a young age but began his early adult years a lawyer. He left his professional life as a lawyer to study music. First, he studied in Warsaw with Władysław Żeleński and he later moved from Warsaw to study at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, graduating at the age of 31. He enjoyed a decent career, though he did not venture into late-romanticism as did his compatriots Szymanowski, Różycki, and Karłowicz.
While not as recognized as Noskowski, Paderewski, or the Young Poland composers, Statkowski was an important figure in Polish music. From 1905, he was a professor of music history and instrumentation at the Warsaw Institute of Music, and in 1909 he succeeded Noskowski as the professor of composition. In his new post, he taught (among others) Apolinary Szeluto, Jan Maklakiewicz, Bolesław Szabelski, and Victor Young
