Diels-Alder reaction is a pericylic reaction. It is also called [4+2]cycloaddition reaction. This is thermally allowed and photochemically not allowed. There are two components in this reaction, diene and dienophile. Diene can be alkene, alkyne, nitrile, nitroso, aldehyde, ketone, imine, azo group. The dienophile can be butadiene or its derivative, α,β-unsaturated aldehyde, α,β-unsaturated ketone or α,β-unsaturated imine. If the DA reaction leads to the generation of heterocyclic adduct, then it is called Hetero DA reaction. This lecture illustrates reactivity of different diene and dienophiles, regioselectivity and stereosectivity of Diels-Alder reaction.
