This video discusses The Lesson of the Master by Henry James. It is a novella and tells the story of a young writer, Paul Overt, who meets Henry St. George, a famous novelist Overt admires. During that time, Overt also meets and falls in love with Marian Fancourt, a young woman who admires both St. George's and Overt's work. St. George advises Overt to neglect marriage life and children so he can attain great success in his career as an artist. Thereby, Overt isolates himself from Switzerland by avoiding Marian. When he returned to London from Switzerland, he learns about the death of George's wife and eventually the engagement of Marian Fancourt and St. George. Overt is surprised and confronts St. George. St. George replies that he has saved Overt by marrying Marian and so he will excel in his career thereon.
