Sarah Livick-Moses - Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt

The Orthodox Christian Studies Center of Fordham University is pleased to present the 2025 Lenten Orthodox Scholars Preach series, featuring short sermons by leading Orthodox Christian scholars.

The sermon for the Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt is given by Dr. Sarah Livick-Moses of Gannon University.

Dr. Livick-Moses earned her B.A. in Literature and History from Hellenic College, a Master of Theological Studies at Boston College, and holds a PhD in Systematic Theology from Boston College. Her primary research fields in systematic theology include spirituality/mystical theology, Trinity and creation, and theological anthropology. Her dissertation explores the doctrines of Trinity and creation in Sergii Bulgakov's major theological writings, placing French psychoanalysis and ecofeminist spirituality into conversation with Orthodox sophiology and iconography. She also works at the intersection of trauma studies and spirituality, particularly engaging collective trauma with political theology from an ecumenical perspective.

Since 2023, Dr. Livick-Moses has been engaged with an ecumenical and international research group, sponsored by the Pro Oriente Foundation, on the "Healing of Wounded Memories" between Catholic and Orthodox communities in Eastern Europe. She was also recently part of a 2024 meeting with members of the same research circle to develop an "Orthodox Theology of Social Peace." In these conversations, Dr. Livick-Moses provides a trauma-informed approach to Orthodox systematic theology and spirituality. Her article, ‘Peace, Peace, When There is No Peace’ On a Theology of Social Peace as a Theology of Collective Trauma,” will appear in an edited volume with Brill as the result of this working group.
