This is part of a series of presentations giving by diving enthusiasts and science professionals interested in citizen science organised by the Finnish Divers' Federation. We started in 2023 on Suomenlinna with a live seminar mainly about the Baltic Sea, covering the environmental risks of WW-I and II wrecks, scale models of wrecks, ghost net removal, and research projects involving technical diving. We learned about the Saimaa ringed seal conservation project, the restoration of sea grass meadows, monitoring and the future of scientific diving education in Finland.
In 2024 the Finnish Divers Federation Sukeltajaliitto continued the journey into inland waters to rivers and lakes. As in 2023, presenters covered both archaeology and ecology in and around water.
Pierre-Yves Cousteau, the son of ocean explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, is the founder of Cousteau Divers, a French non-profit organization for citizen-science, raising awareness, and the conservation of marine life worldwide.
Pierre-Yves is talking about deploying novel temperature sensors by the recreational scuba diving community.
Cousteau Divers had developed several citizen-science projects, which progressively led to the development of the Remora project. Remoras are submersible devices that measure depth, temperature and GPS location during a scuba dive. Using these devices, Cousteau Divers are measuring near-shore shallow sea temperatures in near real-time worldwide (www.cousteaudivers.org). Their modular design allows for additional sensors to be fitted in the future. Remoras were designed to measure temperatures with minimal latency and to send data over WiFi with minimal effort. All you need to do is take it diving, rinse in between dives, and charge it occasionally.
