🌋 登別地獄谷Hell's Valley (Jigokudani), Noboribetsu
Hell's Valley, known locally as Jigokudani, is the primary source of the rich thermal waters for the Noboribetsu Onsen spa town in Hokkaido, Japan.
This spectacular, barren landscape is a crater remnant, approximately 450 meters in diameter, which was formed by the eruption of the Kuttara volcano. Its name, "Hell's Valley," comes from the dramatic sight of steam jets, sulfuric fumes, and boiling hot springs bubbling up from vents in the red-rock terrain, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a mythical underworld.
Walking along the designated wooden boardwalks offers visitors a close-up view of this powerful geothermal activity, where daily flow is estimated to be around 10,000 tons of mineral-rich water, supplying nine different varieties of thermal water to the surrounding inns and public baths.
The strong sulfurous scent and the intense heat make it clear that you are standing atop a highly active part of the earth's crust. Beyond the main valley, numerous smaller trails lead deeper into the surrounding forest, connecting Jigokudani to other famous geothermal features like the Oyunuma Pond, a sulfurous hot spring lake, and the Footbath on the Oyunuma River.
Visiting Hell's Valley is a unique sensory experience, especially in winter when the steam rises dramatically against the snow, and it is considered one of Japan's most impressive and accessible volcanic landscapes. It serves as a stark reminder of the energy that heats the rejuvenating waters Noboribetsu is famous for, cementing its status as a top onsen destination.
