Meet Deesarine Ballayan (@d33sarine), a first-generation Liberian American and queer Pan-Africanist artist. As a 2025 René Smith Fellow at PhillyCAM, Deesarine created with the love for Black people, frustration with injustice, and inspiration from the rebellion of those who came before.
Their artist statement explores how deep values, emotions, and creativity come together through writing, drawing, and future explorations in physical art. Deesarine hopes their work pushes audiences to reflect, challenge beliefs, and find new meaning in shared experience.
This video is part of PhillyCAM’s René Smith Fellowship 2025, a summer program that supported youth creators in developing skills in storytelling, video production, and media literacy.
