This amazing walk to South Stack Lighthouse on Anglesey in North Wales begins at the top of the cliff looking down towards the beautiful view of the island and lighthouse below. This Grade II listed working lighthouse was built by Trinity House in 1809 and is 92 feet (28m) high. Once manned by a keeper, it became operated remotely by Trinity House in 1984. As we make our way down the 400 steep winding clifftop steps to the lighthouse below you can hear the sounds of the many seabirds including Guillemots, Razorbills, Seagulls and Puffins. The views on the way down are beautiful and as we reach the bottom of the steps we make our way across the suspension bridge, which was once a wooden rope bridge! On the island the lighthouse is open to visitors where you can tour the engine room and exhibition displays and climb the steps to the top of the lighthouse to see the light and spectacular views. Originally fitted with oil lamps and reflectors, after replacements to further lanterns, the lighthouse was electrified in 1938 and the light can be seen every 10 seconds. We finish our walk looking back towards the cliffs with the powerful sea crashing in and the sea birds flying overhead. Now to climb the 400 steps back up!
