Monica Vitti, born Maria Luisa Ceciarelli in Rome in 1931, rose to fame with her starring roles in films directed by Michelangelo Antonioni during the early 1960s. Her breakthrough film, L’Avventura, initially booed at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival, eventually won a Special Jury Prize for its beauty and innovative film language. Vitti's career continued with critical praise for her roles in subsequent Antonioni films, as well as English language films and comedies, earning her numerous awards and accolades before retiring from the public eye due to Alzheimer's disease.
