Fourfold is a dynamic and exploratory percussion quartet by the ensemble Dead Resonance—Brett Dietz, Chad Heiny, Joe Moore, and Jude Traxler. Inspired by the collaborative yet independent compositional approach of John Cage and Lou Harrison’s Double Music, Fourfold is constructed from distinct sections, each written by a different member of the group. However, rather than composing in direct collaboration, each composer worked independently, contributing their unique musical voice to the piece without prior knowledge of the others’ materials.
The result is a fascinating fusion of styles and textures, where contrasting rhythmic structures, timbral palettes, and formal ideas converge into an organic yet unpredictable whole. As the piece unfolds, moments of synchronicity emerge naturally from the juxtaposition of disparate ideas, creating an intricate dialogue that reflects both individuality and cohesion. Fourfold challenges traditional notions of authorship in chamber music, embracing spontaneity and the unexpected intersections of four distinct creative minds.
