Sometimes you have to go back to your roots. The first navigational technique I learned as a student pilot, aged 15, was pilotage and dead reckoning. No avionics what-so-ever, just pointing the nose towards your destination and watching landmarks on the ground. Great fun in central Washington near Mt Rainer.
