Android's September 2025 System Services Update Adds a Few Highly Requested Features!

In the latest Google Play System update, we're getting some interesting new features added to Android.

Monthly and Quarterly OTA Firmware Updates aren't the only times you get new features added to Android.
There are now these Google System Services updates. . .which used to be called Google Play System Updates.

With these updates sent out each and every week, Google seems to be constantly adding new features, bug fixes, and security enhancements added to Android

So let's take a look at the interesting new changes that are rolling out to Android this week.

Google Play Services
This week, we'll see the Google Play Services application brought up to version 25.35
And with it, we can see the Document Scanner UI finally supports Material 3 Expressive design guidelines.

Some Device Connections related services had a few bugs fixed for those using an Android smartphone and a Wear OS device.

And a really nice new feature that has been added. . .we'll finally be able to use Wake-on-LAN with Android's
Cast feature to turn on your Linux TV while it's in sleep mode.
Honestly, this should have been added years ago.

If you live in Brazil, you will now see Theft Protection enabled by default when you setup an Android device.

When you have version 25.35 of the Google Play Services application installed, you'll also begin to notice phone number verification and reachability checks will run automatically when you setup Android.
Although, you can still manage your preferences within the Device Settings area of your Google account if you ever need to make any changes.

And last up, anyone who has a work profile on their smartphone. . .and they also have digital access cards added to it (passes for building entry is a popular example here). Then you'll begin to see them accessible from your personal profile as well.

Which is really nice, as it prevents you from having to log into your work profile just to access the digital access card you use to enter the building you work in.


Google Play Store
You'll also notice that this week the Google Play Store application can be updated to version 47.9.
There aren't a bunch of new changes listed here this week, but we do see there's going to be a new task-based search feature for the Play Store

So instead of having to know the exact name of the application you want to download.
You could search for the words "ebook reader" for example. . .and Google will just know to display as many as it can that will let you read ebooks on your device.

Or you could search for the phrase "file manager" and you'll see a list of apps that fit this role. . .even if the developer hasn't put the words "file manager" in their app details page.



conclusion
Not the biggest update we've ever seen, but there are definitely some useful changes being rolled out to Android this week.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the wake-on-LAN feature. It's something that I've personally tried and was shocked to learn it had been implemented into the Cast feature set.
And I think the task-based search for the Google Play Store could immensely help with discoverability.

I just hope they are helping the smaller app and game developers along the way.
Since I worry this could just continue to surface the worst apps when searching in Google Play.
