Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons of History in Hindi. In this edition Tarikh Nikhil talks about Kilvenmani massacre or Keezhvenmani massacre. This was an incident in Keezhvenmani village of Thanjavur district. On the night of 25 December, 1968, class and caste animosity against the Dalit labourers of the village led to the murder of 44 innocent people including16 women, 23 children and five men.
Dalit labourers working on the farms of upper-caste landowners went on strike, demanding an increase in their wage (from 5 padis per kalam to 6). The workers continued to voice their demand as part of a farm workers’ union that was led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI(M). This irked the landlords who were a part of the Paddy Producers Association, led by Gopala Krishna Naidu. They intimidated the small landowners to toe the line and terrorised the workers on strike, who were eventually replaced by outside labourers.
On 25 December 1968, the landowners kidnapped a tea-shopkeeper, a sympathiser of the CPI(M) led workers’ union, and beat him. The labourers gathered to free the shopkeeper, and in the process, a landlord’s agent was killed. According to survivors, on the same night, hundreds of men led by Naidu arrived in police lorries and surrounded the part of the village where the Dalits resided, attacked them and shot them with country guns used to kill birds. They also burnt down houses.
