High Court Judge Portia Phahlane is facing 19 charges of corruption and money laundering linked to the ongoing leadership battle within the IPHC church. She was arrested this week alongside her son and church faction leaders and has been barred from entering the Pretoria High Court. The allegations include cash bribes, undisclosed payments, and attempts to influence judgments in a case she was presiding over.
Judges Matter has called for her to step down immediately and for the Judicial Service Commission to advise the President to suspend her without delay, saying the seriousness of the allegations strikes at the core of a judge's duty to act without fear, favour, or prejudice. Chief Justice Mandisa Maya highlighted that Judge Phahlane will be placed on special leave while criminal proceedings and potential suspension are considered. The statement also emphasises the presumption of innocence, the independence of the judiciary, and the importance of protecting ongoing cases.
