Fettling clean the top rollers on our historic carding machine requires a little gymnastics. The smaller rollers are called "Strippers," and the pin nap on these rollers require them to be fettled clean towards the front of the carding machine. The larger rollers are called "Workers" and are fettled clean towards the back of the machine. Each of these rollers (workers and strippers) are cleaned one at a time, as the clean area of the main drum (called the "Swift") is slowly advanced by hand beneath them.
